In a spectacular display of determination and skill, Afghanistan secured their first-ever ODI victory against Pakistan in eight attempts. This stunning triumph was marked by a flawless chase, as Afghanistan successfully tracked down a challenging target of 283, securing an eight-wicket win with six balls to spare. This victory also stands as Afghanistan's highest successful chase in ODIs, and the highest chase against Pakistan in a World Cup game.

First Innings: Pakistan's Resilient Batting

Opting to bat first on a pitch devoid of grass, Pakistan's Babar Azam led from the front. Supported by Abdullah Shafique's determined half-century, and aided by vital contributions from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan, Pakistan posted a formidable 282 for 7.

Afghanistan's Commanding Response

Afghanistan's pursuit began with a bang. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran forged an impressive 130-run partnership for the opening wicket, both notching up fifties. Despite the exit of both openers, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi stepped up, guiding the chase with composure.

Gurbaz and Ibrahim's Explosive Start

Gurbaz and Ibrahim showcased brilliant boundary-scoring paired with exceptional running between the wickets. Exploiting Pakistan's erratic fielding, they reached the 100-run mark in just 15.3 overs, with both openers achieving their fifties.

Rahmat and Shahidi Seal the Deal

Following the departure of Gurbaz, Rahmat Shah assumed control in his characteristic industrious style. He and Ibrahim thwarted any hopes of a collapse, consistently punctuating dot balls with timely boundaries. Despite Ibrahim's exit due to cramps after a valiant 87, Shahidi partnered with Rahmat, steering the chase towards a resounding victory.

Bowling Struggles for Pakistan

Pakistan's bowling unit struggled to make an impact, failing to extract much from the pitch. Rahmat Shah remained unbeaten at 77, while Shahidi contributed a crucial 48* off 45 balls. It was captain Rahmat who struck the winning runs, sealing an emotional victory for Afghanistan.

This historic victory is a testament to Afghanistan's determination and skill. Their impeccable performance against Pakistan, coupled with their clinical approach throughout the tournament, places them in a formidable position. As the World Cup progresses, Afghanistan's impressive form will undoubtedly make them a team to watch.
